Common Dress Variations for Muslim Women

Muslim women are most likely to wear modest clothing, but they can always vary when it comes to colours and styles. This also varies from one country to another.

Here are some common ideas when it comes to Muslim dress for women. Here is an outlook to those.

  • Hijab

This is the most common one when it comes to modest dressing in Muslim women. But this is not a full length dress. It is a rectangular piece of cloth which is mainly used as a head scarf. But when it comes to dressing according to Islamic tradition, the head scarf is a very essential thing. This one is folded and then placed on the head and then fastened under the chin. To some women, wearing a hijab is a choice and to some, it is a must.

  • Khimar

Khimar is nothing but another variation of hijab. This not only covers the head of the woman but also covers the face acting like a veil. This is a particular style of a head scarf which can easily cover the top portion of a woman’s body as it comes down to the waist.

  • Abaya

There are many women in Saudi Arabia who still wear the traditional style of abaya where there is a full head and a face covering. But at present, there are many women who do not want to wear the face cover when they are wearing the abaya. To be precise, abaya is a cloak style clothing for women and it is very common in the Gulf countries. They are mainly made from synthetic fibre and they mostly come in black colour. They can also have some sequins and embroideries. One can wear this dress from the top of their head and it will go till the feet. Or one can wear it from their shoulders and this one is fastened tightly from back. One can also wear a head scarf with this.

  • Chador

This is also a cloak like clothing which looks like abaya and it is worn by the Muslim women. It goes from top of the head to the toes of a woman’s body. But this one is a loose fitting dress and it is not tied from the front or behind.

  • Jilbab

There is an outer garment for Muslim women as well. This is called jilbab. This is mainly worn by a Muslim woman when they are going out in public. But the style of this cloak is a bit different. It is more fitted than the abaya and it comes in varieties of colours and fabrics. This looks more like a long and tailored coat.

  • Niqab

This is not a dress but a face veil which is worn by the Muslim women and it may leave the eye area uncovered.

  • Burqa

This is a dress which covers the entire body of a woman. It is mainly worn by the women residing in Afghanistan. Here the eyes are covered with a mesh screen.

There are also other Islamic dresses for women like Salwar Kameez and Thibab.
